The season of travel is commencing – and if you’re anything like us, you have your eye on some serious vacation time. While planning a trip is fun, packing for one is at best a hassle and at worse, a total nightmare. (If you’ve ever spent the night before your vacation frantically emptying your closet into your suitcase, then you know what we’re talking about.) We’re here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be this way – in fact, packing can be simple and easy, granted you are using the right strategies. Ahead, we’re sharing some of them!

Start with your shoes.
We’re all about dressing from the feet up – which is why we always select the shoes we’ll be traveling with first. So, to get started, think a bit about what you’ll be doing on your trip and what footwear that requires. In our case, we usually try to bring one pair of sneakers (we’re all about that active life), one pair of comfortable-but-elevated “everyday” shoes and one pair of sexy shoes, period. Also, if you’re an accessories freak or shoe lover, that’s okay. And, oh yeah, be sure to pack these items first – they take up the most room in your suitcase and can cause problems if you try to jam them in at the end.
Don’t forget toiletries.
More than that extra t-shirt, a good set of products really makes the difference when traveling. So, be sure to take your time to consider everything you need – from your favorite moisturizer (hello, eXO Face!) to supplements to your go-to mascara. The one exception here is if you’re traveling to Europe, in which case you have our full permission to hit the gorgeous pharmacies there and stock up on all sorts of absurdly chic goodies. (We personally are obsessed with French soaps and toothpastes – fabulous!)
Plan your outfits.
This is the secret trick of really great packers – they diligently plan out full outfits before packing them. We know: It seems like a pain. But, really, you’ll be saving so much energy and space in your luggage if you can select not just the clothes you’re bringing with you, but also how those pieces come together for various outfits. Intimidated? Use your shoes as guiding points and don’t be afraid to use the same pair of pants or cardigan in multiple outfits – versatility is everything.
Ensure you have quality staples.
Along those lines, there are certain items of clothing – a little black dress, a trench coat, a classic black one-piece – that are staples for any wardrobe. When packing for a trip, ensure that you’ve got some of these essential, go-to pieces in the mix. They’ll serve as your sartorial workhorses and you won’t get tired of them as easily as that trendy, one-shoulder top.
Stick to a palette.
Ever unpack your suitcase and realize you were basically packing it colorblind? Yeah, us too. Avoid that sinking, kaleidoscope feeling by selecting a distinctive palette for your vacation and sticking to it. For us, that means a lot of neutrals – grays, blacks and whites – with the occasional pop of color thrown in. Again, use your footwear as your guide here.
