CLEANING UP OUR DIET
For most of us, December is all about decadence – champagne, multi-course dinners, extra sweets. (Yeah, baby.) While that’s apropos for the season, January is an ideal time to reform not-so-mindful eating habits. We’re opposed to strict diets, which is why we keep things smart and simple in three steps:
- Start by cutting back on the booze and upping hydration. Optimally, you’ll drink about 64 ounces of water per day (roughly 8 glasses), adding in more if you’re working out.
Next, ensure that you’re filling up on leafy greens, colorful vegetables and healthy fats (think avocados, salmon and nuts) during each mealtime. Avoid quick “weight loss” tactics and focus on eating real food that makes you feel good.
While carbohydrates and sweets aren’t totally off limits, aim to reduce your intake of each and focus on consuming higher-quality options mindfully – such as a beautiful piece of dark chocolate or slice of freshly baked, homemade bread once in a while. Enjoy these things thoroughly – after all, guilt is a total diet killer!
EDITING OUR WARDROBE
Forget spring cleaning – we’re culling our closets in January. Don’t know where to start? Here’s a good rule of thumb: If you haven’t worn something for the past year – and it’s not a “special occasion” piece – you should get rid of it, ideally by donating to a local shelter or friend. Furthermore, part of the editing process could mean investing in new things; use a shrewd eye to figure out any missing pieces in your assortment.
