There’s a collective love-hate relationship with New Year’s resolutions and rightfully so, too. On one hand, resolutions are necessary: Important reminders and essential encouragers, they help many of us make positive change in our lives. On the other, they’re inherently flawed: Often difficult to keep, guilt-driven promises we tell ourselves on January 1st …and then forget in just a few short months. Having made plenty of good and (very) bad resolutions, we see both sides of the coin – but firmly believe in their viability. Ahead, we’re sharing some of our favorite beauty-oriented resolutions to kick-start the New Year. Good luck!
I will clean out my beauty cabinet once per season.
Begin 2017 by simplifying your cabinet, a worthy exercise that encourages both cleanliness and organization. Begin by tossing old skincare items – anything more than one year old – and culling your makeup bag to ensure you have a streamlined assortment of clean and up-to-date products. Continue this exercise at the start of every new season and you’ve got yourself a yearlong resolution.
I will identify my beauty essentials.
Along those lines, make 2017 the year where you hone in on the beauty products that work best for you: From your go-to cleanser to that perfect shade of lipstick. Pinpointing your essentials means you’re always putting your best face – and legs, feet, and hands – forward, plus you’re avoiding wasting money and time on products that don’t work for you. (Glitter eye shadow, we’re looking at you.)
I will make time for wellness rituals.
We can spend hours mindlessly scrolling Instagram, but when it comes to actually engaging in all-important self-care, many of us claim that there just “isn’t time.” In 2017, this changes. Carve out intentional space for the important wellness rituals that keep you feeling happy and healthy – from a nightly bath to a monthly facial. If need be, schedule these items into your calendar in advance as though they were actual work commitments.
I will remove my makeup before bed.
Your grandma chided you for falling asleep with your mascara still on and she’s right: Sleeping with your makeup on is a huge skincare no-no. It can lead to clogged pores, bacterial infections (ew), distressed skin, and a messy pillowcase in the morning. This year, make a pledge that no matter how tired you are the makeup goes off before you hit the sheets. Your skin will look better and grandma will be smiling down on you.
I will stop touching my face and playing with my hair.
Ever find yourself anxiously twirling your hair or nervously touching your face? We’re all guilty of these adolescent quirks, but that doesn’t make them worth rationalizing. Channel your inner boss lady and free yourself from these juvenile, self-conscious tics. You’ll look more confident, plus you won’t risk messing up your good hair day.
I will leave extractions to the professionals.
Amateur blackhead pickers, this one is for you: Do not pick at your face. Ever. Not only can this habit leave lasting scars, but it also can encourage the spread of bacteria. Leave the extractions to the pros and, in the meantime, get rid of that scary magnifying mirror.
I will embrace my unique beauty.
Got freckles? Don’t cover them up. Have thick eyebrows? Let ‘em be bushy. Does your kinky-curly hair recall Keri Russell circa Felicity years? Wear it au naturale. We’re all about individuality and personality here at eXO, so consider this your invitation to allow 2017 to become the year where you do you. Because embracing your unique beauty looks good you.
